Therapy Options for Heart Failure and Heart Disease
Heart disease is the world’s leading cause of death each year. The American Heart Association says heart disease (which involves the blood vessels in the heart, limbs, and brain) resulted in almost 691,000 deaths in the United States in 2020.
Heart failure (which is when the heart isn’t pumping as well as it should be, and the body isn’t getting the blood and oxygen it needs) affects an estimated 6.2 million Americans over the age of 20.
With those statistics, we know there are many individuals in our area who are affected by heart disease and heart failure and are experiencing difficulties with endurance and a lower quality of life. That’s where the Therapy Team at Walnut Hills can help.
Our Therapy Team can work not only with individuals who are recovering from heart attacks and other heart-related emergencies, but they can also work proactively with individuals to help keep heart disease or heart failure from getting worse or potentially reduce the risk for developing heart disease.
Physical therapists work with each client to personalize a treatment plan for his/her needs, challenges, and goals. They can help improve mobility, manage pain and other chronic conditions, and recover from or prevent injury and chronic disease. Physical therapists work with clients to improve exercise capacity and strength and endurance, as well as overall health and well-being. Individualized treatment plans could include education, aerobic endurance, muscle strengthening, and improving the ability to breathe during activity.
The best way to prevent heart disease and heart failure is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and decrease risk factors. Our team of highly trained therapists at Walnut Hills can work with you to design a program that will improve your ability to take part in home, work, and other activities. Research shows that physical activity and exercise can improve exercise capacity, and physical activity and exercise can also help individuals with heart failure live longer.
